For thirty years the browser was a window: we opened a page, read, clicked and decided the next step. AI agents are changing that relationship. The new promise is not only “tell me where to find something”, but “find it, compare it and carry the task forward for me”.
An agent can move across pages, read information, fill forms, organize results and use tools exposed by websites. This shifts AI from response to action. Quality is no longer measured only by the sentence produced, but by the ability to complete a sequence without losing context or taking the wrong action.
The web, however, was designed mainly for people and deterministic software. An agent interprets instructions, content and interfaces. This creates new attack surfaces. Google’s WebMCP security guidance explicitly warns about malicious instructions hidden in tool definitions or in content returned by a page.
The issue becomes more delicate when the browser contains authenticated sessions. An agent able to read a private page, send a message or modify an account has very different capabilities from a chatbot. It needs scoped permissions, confirmation for sensitive actions, operation logs and technical boundaries.
Websites will have to adapt too. If a growing share of traffic comes from agents, distinguishing people, traditional bots and intelligent automation will become harder. Recent studies show that browser behavior can leave recognizable fingerprints.
For creative work the potential is considerable. An agent could collect references, organize research material, check availability, prepare comparisons or turn a source list into a dossier. But value grows when it remains clear where delegation ends and human decision begins.
The interface of the future may therefore not be a chat. It could be a browser where we see the agent work, can stop it, correct it and approve important steps. Less invisible magic, more observable collaboration.
