A movie theater is designed to concentrate the gaze. The lights go down, the audience becomes almost invisible and one image dominates the room. Smart glasses introduce a new ambiguity into this ritual: their wearer may be watching, receiving captions or assistance, but may also be photographing and recording without making the visible gesture of taking out a phone. The technology does not only change what we see. It makes what we are doing while we watch less legible.
On August 20, the UK Cinema Association confirmed that several British operators were introducing bans or restrictions on camera-enabled smart glasses, including Meta’s AI models. There is no single national ban; policies vary by venue. The stated concerns are film piracy and privacy, two familiar problems made harder to police when the recording device looks like an ordinary pair of glasses.
With a smartphone, filming is socially visible. An arm rises, a screen lights up and posture changes. Smart glasses move the camera onto the face, to the same place from which the gaze begins. Some models signal recording through a small light, but in a dark auditorium, at a distance and during a screening, that indicator may not clearly communicate that capture is taking place. The problem is not only technical: a recognizable gesture has disappeared.
Theater piracy did not begin with glasses. Distributors have fought camcorder and phone recordings for years, especially during the opening days of a release. The new device changes enforcement. Staff can spot someone holding a phone toward the screen; it is much harder to know whether a person wearing smart glasses is using an innocent feature, recording the film or has simply left the device active. Control then shifts from behavior to the object itself.
There is also a problem beyond copying the screen. Glasses can capture audiences, employees, actors at a Q&A or guests at a premiere. Some British theater operators already require people using such devices to film to remove them; performers’ union Equity supported the policy as protection against covert recording. The venue is not protecting only the projected work. It is also protecting the conditions of those working and attending.
A total ban, however, creates another problem. Smart glasses can offer personal captions, descriptions, translation and assistance to blind, visually impaired, deaf or hard-of-hearing spectators. The UK Cinema Association acknowledged these benefits and stressed that policies should remain relevant and proportionate. Treating every frame as a hidden camera could exclude precisely the people for whom the device makes the experience more accessible.
The issue therefore becomes one of design: how can a venue know which mode a wearable object is using? A simple light does not reveal whether an image is being analyzed locally, sent to an AI assistant, stored or shared. Clearer signals, verifiable protected-space modes, quick ways to disable recording and rules understood before entry would all help. Trust cannot depend entirely on an indicator the public may not know or be able to see.
Cinemas must also avoid improvised responses. An effective policy should distinguish possession, assistive use and recording; explain what is allowed; offer a discreet process for accessibility needs; and train staff without turning them into technology police. Banning an object is easier than managing its functions, but it becomes fragile when those functions are embedded in increasingly ordinary devices.
Cinema has already passed through similar conflicts. First the illuminated phone disturbed the darkness, then its camera threatened copying, and finally the personal screen began competing with the collective one. AI glasses almost eliminate the visible screen and move technology into the gaze itself. The old instruction to switch off the phone is no longer enough, because it is not obvious which part of the device must be switched off.
The theater remains one of the few places where we voluntarily agree not to produce images while watching one. For two hours, the gaze does not have to document, publish or prove that it was present. Smart glasses test that convention by making recording permanently possible even when it is not being used. Other people cannot know with certainty whether they are being observed or captured.
EYES OFF is not a rejection of intelligent eyewear. It is a demand to make the boundary between seeing and recording visible again. If the technology wants to enter cinemas, it must learn to declare its intentions as clearly as a theater announces the beginning of a screening. Otherwise the risk is not only losing control of the film. It is losing the trust required to share the dark with other spectators.
