Can AI have an intuition?

Solving a problem does not necessarily mean understanding it. But the distinction is becoming harder to draw.

When an artificial intelligence system helps solve a scientific problem that has remained open for years, the word ‘tool’ suddenly seems insufficient. Not because the machine is necessarily conscious, but because its role no longer resembles that of a calculator.

Models can explore enormous spaces of possibility, identify correlations and suggest steps a researcher had not considered. The result can look like intuition. In human experience, however, intuition also means recognizing the value of a discovery, placing it within a story and understanding its consequences.

A system can produce a correct solution without having any experience of the problem. That distinction forces us to separate capability, understanding and consciousness—three concepts that are often blurred together in public discussion about AI.

The most productive collaboration may be one in which AI expands the space that can be explored while the researcher verifies, interprets and assigns meaning. Perhaps the real question is not whether a machine thinks like us, but whether it forces us to look differently at what we call thought.
