Authenticity becomes a technology

In the age of synthetic content, being authentic is no longer enough: origin, transformations and responsibility increasingly need to be demonstrable.

A photograph can be real and look generated. A synthetic video can look documentary. An authentic file can lose its metadata during sharing and become indistinguishable from a manipulated copy. AI is therefore changing the meaning of authenticity itself.

For a long time authenticity was largely assigned by context: we knew the photographer, publisher, archive or institution presenting an image. That system does not disappear, but it now operates in an environment where files are copied, recompressed, extracted from social platforms and separated from the page that explained their origin.

The most interesting technical response is not a perfect detector. Detectors inspect a result and look for statistical clues; provenance attempts to accompany content with a history. C2PA defines an architecture in which claims and transformations can be connected through cryptographic signatures and verification.

This shifts the question from “does it look authentic?” to “can I reconstruct where it came from?” A Content Credential can carry information about creation, editing and the actors that signed particular claims. It is still not a metaphysical certificate of truth: an authentic photograph can misrepresent an event, while a synthetic reconstruction can be perfectly transparent.

The novelty is that identity and origin are becoming technical components of the file. C2PA’s human and organizational identity recommendation points in that direction: connect credentials not only to tools but also to actors able to take responsibility for specific statements.

For photographers and newsrooms this can mean maintaining continuity between capture, editing and publication. For cinema, distinguishing camera material, reconstruction, VFX and generation. For artists, openly declaring that a work is synthetic while still being able to sign it and document the process.

The challenge will also be cultural. An audience trained only to look for an AI label may reduce everything to a binary division. Provenance is richer: almost every contemporary image moves through a chain of tools. The goal is not to return to an impossible purity of the file, but to make transformations legible.

TECHNICAL AUTHENTICITY is the new paradox of synthetic media: to keep trusting images, part of that trust will be built by information that is not visible inside the image itself.
